Each year Ken Johnston, the administrative assistant to the director of the lab I work in, sends us all pictures from a sand castle competition. I don't know where this annual competition takes place (I know that it's at some beach somewhere, but whether it's a natural or artificial beach, I don't know). See below for some pictures from this year's competition.
It's pretty amazing what people can do with sand!

Wow. I'm lucky if I can get a bucket of sand to come out clean.
I like Helmet Dude in the Celtic canoe. He seems to be looking at the camera thinking, "What are you all staring at?"
That's impressive. All of those definitely put my little sand castles to shame.
They have to use something to make it stick and shape like that to the sand. THere is no way, that it is just sand. We have tried so many times. Does anyone know what they add to the sand?
wow, those are like no sand castles i've ever made! amazing!!!!
Amazing! What cool pictures.
So great! Those look a lot like the ones I make!! :)
I'm blown away at what people can do with sand!

That's all.
wow. that's amazing. i know there are several different competitions. one of which is down here near san diego.
the artistry is unbelievably beautiful...it's simultaneously very sad...it isn't lasting. sand castles onlylast until the tide turns.

Those are crazy! I can't believe people spend so much time doing that.
