Late Trimming Is Better Than None

We've had our tree since the beginning of December, but we haven't found time to actually trim it until tonight.

Feast your eyes, folks. Loverly, ain't it? If you think we're brave (or nuts) to decorate the bottom branches with a toddler in the house, look closer.

Everything within Joy's reach is either baby-friendly or (more often) Joy's toys. I didn't want the bottom half of our tree to be bare, but I didn't want our ornaments demolished, either.

Of course, by putting toys on the lower branches, we may be encouraging a bad habit of pulling things off Christmas trees (until now she's ignored it most of the time). Oh well--she can't do much damage in a week, and perhaps we'll learn helpful insights for future use.

We just put ornaments that don't break on the bottom. That's a cute idea though. Nice tree.

We only have two baby-proof ornaments so far, so we either had to get creative or settle for a half-trimmed tree. :)

That's a great idea to put her toys on at the bottom. Everytime BigE sees the tree I swear he starts crawling full speed trying to get there before I catch him! Just when I have one that doesn't get into things...I have another! :)

Very cute idea!
The glittering temptations of the bright christmas baubles was what finally motivated my little boy to crawl! He had no interest until a golden bell just out of reach...then it was all over. (But not a one was destroyed, and the tree stayed erect!)

cute. we decided against putting up a big tree ... i know it would get pulled down. plus he have a mini on a table and its driving aidan mad!!! i cant even imagine how much more so a big one would be tempting him.

love the baby toys as ornaments!!!

You are a brave set of parents! We didn't even get a tree when Archer was crawling. Sometimes it felt like all we were saying was "no-no."

I forgot to ask in my last comment, what is the life status of your tree? Did you have better luck this year?

That is a gorgeous tree!

This is Allie Guthrie. I have been trying to contact Alissa for some time now. Do you happen to have an e-mail address for her?

Your family is darling. Glad you are enjoying your career. My husband did his grad work at MIT. He, too, was interested in bio-electrtical engineering.

Best to your family!

What a great idea! Between Big E and our dog Griffin the bottom of our tree has been pretty thrashed. We should have put kids toys and dog treats at the bottom of ours! Hope you had a great Christmas! Love ya!

Do your really have friends called "The Flakes" or are you making that one up?

Caitlin, our tree is still a fairly healthy green, and it appreciates your inquiry after its welfare.

Aunt Jill, we do indeed know a Flake family. It's actually an old-time LDS name - Snowflake, Arizona got its name from the original settlers: the Snows and the Flakes. Come to think of it, we know a Snow family, too.
